There are plenty of fun events and things to do in the village of Haworth. Located in Yorkshire, England, the village is famed for its’ connection with the Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne, who lived here for most of their lives.
Taking place this 19 and 20 of May 2007, the annual 1940’s Weekend is a trip down memory lane. There will be GI’s and civilians in authentic clothes; vintage vehicles; a marching pipe band; 40’s music and swing dancing; a RAF memorial flight flypast on Saturday; Paul Harper will be on hand to entertain; home guards will be in the streets; and there will be dancing and live music both nights.
Keighley & Worth Valley Steam TrainsRegular service on the Worth Valley Railway runs on the weekends from 9:15am to 4:30pm. They connect Keighley, Ingrow, Damems, Oakworth, Haworth and Oxenhope. The gas lit stations have open fires and there’s an Ale Buffet Car on most trains. Steam Gala Weekends happen on February 17 and 18 and October 12, 13 and 14, when locomotives visit the village. Vintage Train Days take place on June 3, July 1 and August 5, when visitors can travel on Museum of Rail Travel vintage carriages. The Beer & Music Weekend is from October 26-28, with up to 70 real ales to taste. September 15 and 16 is the Day out with Thomas, a time for children to meet “Thomas” the train and many of his friends. Tours of the steam line are available for groups and school parties from June 19-21 and 26-28, 2007.
Although the graveyard looks harmless enough in the daytime, this tour takes place during the evening. Guests are provided with lanterns and guided through the Haworth gravestones that are home to almost 40,000 souls. Tours are only available during the darker months of the year, which are April, May, September, October, November and December. They take place on most Saturday nights and last one hour. Extra tours happen around Halloween and reservations are recommended.
This tour is similar to the above-mentioned one, but takes place on most Saturday nights during the months of June, July and August. For 60 minutes, walk through the shaded streets and squabbling rooks of Haworth, if you dare.
This tour takes walkers to discover Victorian Haworth. It’s a non-strenuous introduction to the village through some of the quaintest streets. Available most days from April through October and lasts 35 minutes.
This popular walk takes place from the end of November through to December. The guide comes dressed in a Victorian greatcoat and the tour explores how Christmas was celebrated in the Bronte times.
ScribblemaniaThe Bronte Parsonage Museum has a writing contest on the go for youth under the age of 16 years old. They are encouraging children and teenagers to submit poems about their favorite pictures, whether a photograph, drawing or painting. This maintains the theme of the Bronte sisters’ love for images.
